A Foggy Morning Tucking Flower Beds in for Winter

What a beautiful fog we had here in Kentucky this morning. I love how mystical fog looks and enjoy seeing it here often. There's something about it that seems to freeze time for a moment.

We have freezing temperatures coming this evening so I've prepped my last dahlia bed with frost cloth to protect them from freezing. On the west coast where I'm used to growing dahlias starting in my childhood in Oregon, the temperatures don't quite warrant a need to protect dahlia tubers from freezing in the ground over winter.

I've dug and divided some of my tubers for safe storage this winter where they will not freeze and therefore not rot. I'd like to continue growing the rest of my dahlia's tubers in an attempt to allow larger tubers to develop. The dahlias I'm leaving in the ground for now, I am protecting with a layer of leaf mulch to insulate and also a frost cloth over the top that will prevent the plants from freezing.

Tuber growth slows considerably in colder temperatures, which signal the tubers to go dormant, but I'm trying to get a few more days of growth with these warm days we've still had. I love exploring the limits of nature!
